Questions, answered plainly.

What referring offices, specialists and patients ask about eReferral, answered from what the product does today.

Security and privacy

eReferral is built for HIPAA compliance. Patient identifiers and uploaded files are encrypted at rest with AES-256, field by field. Each user can turn on two-factor sign-in with an authenticator app (TOTP); with it enabled, a password alone is not enough. Sessions end after 8 hours at most, and every case view is written to a hash-chained, tamper-evident audit log.

No software is HIPAA certified, because no official HIPAA certification exists. eReferral is built for HIPAA compliance, and how a practice uses it is part of that practice's own compliance.

No. Access is role-based and scoped to the practice: one practice cannot read another practice's cases or reports. The referring office and the specialist on a case both see that case.

Yes. Privacy mode blurs patient names, so the case list can stay open on screens in shared spaces.

Sending and receiving referrals

Radiographs, CBCT, photos, PDF and DICOM files, up to 25 MB each. They upload with the referral and are encrypted at rest.

The referring office marks a case routine, urgent or emergency. The specialist's queue is ordered by urgency and then by how recently the case arrived, so an emergency is always at the top.

Yes. Each specialty starts from a shared set of questions, and a practice can save its own version. The referral form then asks those questions for that practice, including questions that only appear after a particular answer.

When treatment is complete, the specialist writes the final case report and completes the case. The report, with any report documents, returns to the referring office on the same record.

Patients

A tracking code from the dentist's office opens a status page: referral sent, received, appointment booked, treatment under way or complete, and the appointment date. No name, date of birth or clinical details are shown.

No. The patient enters the tracking code on the tracking page. The tracking code is long and randomly generated. Keep it private.

Access and the pilot

eReferral is in pilot. Practices can request access, and a specialist practice already using eReferral can invite its referring offices with a link.

Not yet. eReferral works on its own today and does not sync with practice management systems.

Still have a question? Ask us when you request access, or read the security page in full.
